Hiking - A Metaphor for Life

So we went on this awesome hike in Moab with our kids. It was about five miles along a little creek and ended at the 6th largest natural arch in America. When we got to the end we had the arch all to ourselves. It was a pretty awesome experience. Our kids did well on the hike with very little proding needed. Towards the end of the hike I decided to hike ahead to see how far it was to the end and if it was worth pushing the kids to get there. I came to a point in the trail where I wasn't sure where to go. There was about a six foot high scramble up some rocks that you could go over or there was a little trail that headed downhill to the right. The path down the hill was well worn and the path over the rocks was not very obvious at first. As it turned out the path going downward led to a dropoff at the edge of a cliff. Going up over the rocks was really the way to go. It got me thinking. Human nature is usually to take the easier path but just like on the trail if we really want to get to where we're going, we have to go the harder route most of the time. It's not always the easy way that pays. Sometimes what looks like the easy way leads us off cliffs.
